List of Interesting Facts About Arapaima

Let's admit it, even arapaima has a mysterious and quite intimidating appearance. Not only that, arapaima turns out to have equally interesting characters and legends. What are they? Let's discuss.

1. Able to Survive Up to 24 Hours on Land

Arapaima is a fish that breathes with a bimodal respiratory system. This means that they breathe using gills and a swim bladder to exchange gas with their environment. Because of adapting to this respiratory system, Arapaima must breathe air and surface every 10-20 minutes. It may sound inefficient, but thanks to this, arapaima can survive on land without water for as long as 24 hours.

2. From February to April, Arapaima Makes Nests at the Bottom of the River

Approaching the spawning season, around February to April, arapaima pairs will make a nest 50 cm wide and 15 cm deep at the bottom of the sandy river when the water level begins to recede. After that, the female arapaima will release 50,000 eggs which will be fertilized externally by the male arapaima. After fertilization, the male arapaima is responsible for guarding the eggs, while the female arapaima is responsible for guarding the territory from predators. Arapaima eggs will hatch in 4-5 days between May and August when the water surface begins to rise. The higher the water surface, the easier it is for baby arapaima to obtain food. In the first 3 months after hatching, these baby fish will be cared for by the male arapaima. Generally, arapaima will reach sexual maturity at the age of 4-5 years.

3. The Myth of Arapaima, the Fish Reincarnation of the Amazon Tribe Chief's Son

In Portuguese, arapaima is known as Pirarucu, which means red fish. Surprisingly, this name also has a legendary story and myth behind it. Pirarucu is believed to be the son of an Amazon tribe chief who had a bad temper because he was often rude and liked to make fun of others. Because of his nature, Pirarucu was thrown into the bottom of the river by the gods. After going through various transformations, Pirarucu turned into a fish which was then commonly known as arapaima. Until now, the name pirarucu fish is still used by local people.
