Not only showcasing the beauty of marine fish, BXSea oceanarium also presents the charm of freshwater fish, ranging from arapaima, piranha, to alligator gar.
It's not complete to visit an aquarium without a combination of the diversity of marine and freshwater fish. This is because the two habitats produce aquatic biota that are very different in character and physically. Marine fish generally have more unique colors with exotic shapes that are difficult to find in freshwater fish. This is due to differences in environmental conditions. The sea has many colorful coral reefs, so these exotic shapes make it easier for fish to camouflage and protect themselves from predators.
Glimpse the Charm of Freshwater Fish at BXSea and Its Interesting Facts
The presence of hammerhead sharks and other types of sharks has been highly anticipated since BXSea's soft opening last December. However, that doesn't mean you can just pass up the charm of freshwater fish. Facilitated with 20 exciting journey options, BXSea also presents the King of River zone containing various types of superior freshwater fish. There is arapaima, a type of large fish that can weigh hundreds of kilograms, to ferocious fish from the Amazon River.
In fact, arapaima is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world. This fish, which originates from the Amazon River, has a torpedo-like shape and is covered in greenish-black scales with red accents in some parts. The arapaima's mouth functions like a vacuum that can suck up food around it when it's hungry. To survive, this fish needs oxygen every 10-20 minutes and can survive on land for up to 24 hours. Arapaima is not a rare type of fish because its population is still very large in the wild. In Indonesia itself, arapaima is an invasive predator fish, so its existence is regulated by law so as not to endanger the balance of the ecosystem. Luckily, the presence of arapaima at BXSea has met the standards and special placement so it will not harm other fish.
You're not mistaken. Alligator gar, as the name suggests, does look like a combination of a crocodile and a fish. Like arapaima, alligator gar is also among the largest freshwater fish in the world, weighing up to 350 pounds or around 1.5 quintals with a length of up to 3 meters. Because of its large size, not many natural predators prey on alligator gar. As a result, this fish, which originates from the Mississippi River, can live up to 50 years in its natural habitat. In terms of character, alligator gar has a distinctive asymmetrical tail and has a dorsal fin that is very far from the head. The flesh of alligator gar can actually be consumed with certain limitations. However, it should be noted that gar eggs (including alligator gar) are very poisonous to humans because they contain ichthyotoxin, a type of protein poison that is harmful to health.
Who doesn't know this freshwater fish. Piranha has a blunt mouth and a protruding lower jaw because it is longer than its upper jaw. This oval-shaped fish can live an average of 10-25 years. There are various variations of Piranha colors according to age, location, and population. However, in general, piranha are silvery gray or golden. Often there are piranhas that are brightly colored with orange or red accents on the head, belly, or fins.
Besides arapaima, piranha, and alligator gar, there are many more interesting aquatic biota at BXSea.
